You’d be surprised at how many people don’t know how to replace the tires on their own vehicles. They just go to the local garage and buy whatever tires are the cheapest instead of quality brands that can save you the hassle of a blowout down the road or even a wreck. While you can do just that, there are some simple steps that anyone can take to replace their car’s tires safely.
First you should always use the same type of tires. That means brand and model. While you can mix and match you really shouldn’t since all tires are made differently and many are different sizes and have different tread shapes which may wear unevenly. This can have a negative effective on the stability of your vehicle. There are some exceptions to this rule like if your car was fitted with different size tires on purpose.
If you buy tires that have different speed ratings then the lower speed tires should always be in the front of the vehicle (even if it’s rwd or 4wd). But if possible you always want the same speed rated tires to maintain the correct speed capability of the car.
Now if you need to replace only two tires or you can only afford two and replace the ones in the worst condition then you should make sure that they are put in the back. The reason for this is twofold: the vehicle will be less likely to fishtail in rainy conditions and you will have better grip with the new tires so the rear axle is the best place for the higher grip tires.
By just following these few simple tips you should have an idea of what to look for when it comes time to change those tires once again. If you have any other tips you’d like to add to this article please leave a comment.
